# Codec patent notice

Open-source copyright licenses and codec patent rights are separate matters.

Kaptiono can process standardized media formats such as AAC, H.264/AVC, MP4 and MOV. Depending on jurisdiction, product model, distribution method and commercial use, standardized codecs may be subject to patent claims, patent pools, royalties, exemptions or other requirements.

The Safari/WebKit fallback described in this repository uses FFmpeg's built-in AAC decoder only. GPL and nonfree FFmpeg modes are disabled and the custom LibAV fallback does not enable AAC encoding. These are copyright-license safeguards. They do not establish that every codec use is royalty-free in every country or commercial scenario.

Before commercial distribution at meaningful scale, the project owner should obtain qualified legal advice regarding codec patent obligations relevant to the intended countries and business model.
